Just go to my training blog...

I've decided I've got too many blogs. Since I'm tracking my training and that deals with all my Project LB stuff, I'm going to shut this one down shortly. For my training/project LB updates, go here.

GOGI 10K

I’m back from the Get Outside on Governor’s Island 10K!!

It was my first, and overall it was great! It was COLD at the start because of wind – I guess when you’re on a little island in New York Harbor you’re going to get wind from all sides. But once I got going I forgot about it – except when it became a headwind from hades. Oy!

Still, I ran within myself and walked when I needed to. I still improved on my 5K time with the first 1/2 of the race. I was on track to essentially double that time but in the last mile or so, my right knee tightened up a bit so I slowed down to keep from doing serious damage.

One thing that was great that at around 4.1, someone from my running club was the volunteer marshall. We hadn’t met yet, but I was wearing my new club singlet, and she saw it and was all “WOOHOO FRONT RUNNERS!!!!!!” and then asked if I was Beth (we have a women’s listserve, so we’d chatted online). She was SOOOOOO encouraging, it helped me fly through that section of the course.

I still managed to pull a 1:17:19 chip time!! (1:18:10 gun time) So I’m happy with that! Even if I was last in my age group. I RAN IT and that’s what matters!!

Eating now, and icing the knees with bags of berries and chicken fried rice. Hey…you go with what you’ve got. LOL.

Oh yes…one discovery I made? I can definitely use GU Mint Chocolate gels!!! That stuff is good!!!!

And a picture of me before I left this morning. Forgive the backwardsness…I had to take it in a mirror.

Weigh-in

I upped the sleep a bit this week. Let's see the results shall we?

Last week:
weight - 185.8
body fat - 34.6%
water - 47.7%
bone density - 6.6%
BMI - 29.9

This week:
weight - 183.6
body fat - 34.3%
water - 47.9%
bone density - 6.6%
BMI - 29.5

So woo! Mini-plateau appears busted. Also lost half an inch off my waist and an inch off my hips!

AND!!!! I'm no longer "obese" per the BMI scale! I'm merely overweight!! :) Yay!!!!

Running and Strength

Running is coming along well. I have a 10K on Sunday. We shall see how that goes. Fingers crossed!!!! I have to clear 4.1 miles in an hour or less to avoid being swept - a quirk of this course and having to be clear of an area by 9:30. If we start RIGHT at 8:30 I should be good. If we go much beyond that...well, we'll see. I'll give it my best shot and see what happens.

Today I did all of Bob's Super Strength workout. It's so tough. I'm still not sure if I like it or not. LOL. I know it does good for me though, so that's incentive to do it. I'd love to keep it up during training, but I suspect I should do it more than once a week...and I really wanted one of my 2 cross-training workouts to be yoga. So...I don't know. We'll see.

So far things seem to be going well though! Woo!

Weigh-in

I know...I have the best of intentions to write more. :( I'll try to do better!!

Anyhoodles... It's weigh-in day!!

Per my scale...

Last week:
weight - 186.8
body fat - 34.6%
water - 47.7%
bone density - 6.6%
BMI - 30.0

This week:
weight - 185.8
body fat - 34.6%
water - 47.7%
bone density - 6.6%
BMI - 29.9

Woohoo! Loss! I'll take a pound. :) Definitely going to work on the amount of sleep - I really have noticed when I get more sleep (like 7-8 hours a night) I lose more weight!

Weigh-In

Another Friday morning, another date with the scale. Let's see how I did.

Last Week:
weight - 187
body fat - 34.8%
water - 47.6%
bone density - 6.6%
BMI - 30.0

This Week:
weight - 186.8
body fat - 34.6%
water - 47.7%
bone density - 6.6%
BMI - 30.0

So minimal loss, but I did do measurements and I've lost an inch off of my waist and an inch odd of my hips. I can tell that changes are going on - my fat on my stomach area is in that lovely lumpy looser stage - and in the upper abs especially I can see some definition under the lumpy looser fat. So that's progress.

I do know I haven't been getting 7-8 hours of sleep a night. Must work on improving that.

Onward to the next week!

Oops! Didn't mean to neglect!!!

Let's see...

Sunday. Race for the Cure. I ran it in 39:14!!!! I was in shock! When I rounded the last curve and saw the finish line clock and did the math I'm pretty sure the words "What the fuck?!?!?!?" left my mouth. Kind of loud. And the best thing is I ran the majority of the time!! :)

Did all of Bob's Super Strength dvd. The jury is still out on if I like it or not. It's tough, and I had to take a lot of breaks - and also need to get some weights that let the bar sit a little higher off the floor because I'm killing my knuckles with plank rows and alternating T-stands with my weights now.

Yesterday was the cardio dvd. I'm liking it better - still VERY glad my name isn't Becky. Ha! And I noticed that today was the first time I haven't been sore the day afterwards! Woohoo!!

Today I went back to the gym to run. I decided to take the towel I got from Tiger Balm at the sponsor expo on Sunday and throw it over the display like I've seen some people do. And wow! I didn't get nearly as tired as I do when I can see the display. (I decided to give it a shot since there weren't timers on the route on Sunday and I ran a lot more...I'm thinking that seeing the time does a mental number on me and makes me more tired than I really am.) And wow!! I ran for 30+ minutes at 4.8mph!!! I say + because I stupidly accidentally hit the stop button partway into the run - I guess I got too close to the front rail and my hand hit the stop button on a swing - and had to restart, so my time restarted at 0. BUT I know I started running during the closing credits on Dr. Phil and I stopped when the 2nd episode of Judge Judy came on.

AND I felt great doing it! Stretched out for at least 20 minutes afterwards, and everything feels fine! :) Yay!!!

Going along...

So things have been going along pretty well with my workouts. I did take today as a rest day because the muscles at the upper backs of my thighs (are those still hamstrings?) have been really tight. The foam roller and I are about to have some quality time!!

Tomorrow will likely be yoga - get some good stretching in!

Then Sunday is the Komen Race for the Cure! Excited!!

BUT!!!!!! My BIG NEWS!!!!!

www.MyVacationCountdown.com Ticker

Yep...you read that right! I'm doing the Walt Disney World Half Marathon on January 8, 2011!!!!!

Setting up my training calendar this weekend.

I'll still be using this blog for general Project LB stuff and the occasional "here's how training's going" update, but for specifics, bookmark Running With Mickey! - it's the blog I'll be using for detailed blogging of my training for the half!

I'm so excited!!!!!

Weigh-In

I am learning it really is true - if you write down everything that goes into your mouth, you're more likely to lose weight! Loving myfitnesspal.com!! It makes it SO easy to keep track of your calories!! Both the ones you burn through exercise and the ones you take in through eating.

The numbers speak for themselves.

Last week:
weight - 191.6
body fat - 35.3%
water - 47.1%
bone density - 6.6%
BMI - 30.8

This week:
weight - 187
body fat - 34.8%
water - 47.6%
bone density - 6.6%
BMI - 30.0

AND might I add that lovely girlie times started yesterday!! So clearly something's working!! Yay!!

Lots more to report on later!!! Stay tuned!!!

My first EVER 5K!!!

I DID IT!!!!!

I was up at 5:30am to have my banana breakfast shake, get dressed, and hit the subway to catch the ferry to Governor's Island for the 2nd Annual World Trade Center Run to Remember.

The race started a little after 10. I did try the trick of having slightly slower stuff at the beginning of my playlist, and it helped a little...but I still ended up walking a little more than usual - though for a first real solid run outside, I'm not holding that against myself. I think I ran faster than usual when I did run. When I hit the 1 mile marker, the timer was between 12 minutes and 13 minutes, so I know I went out fast! I ended up having to jump into a porta-potty about mid-way through for a minute - they had a weird set up and had us around the starting area where there were no potties around 20 minutes ahead of gun time. I had unknowingly planned my playlist almost exactly right. When I rounded the corner and could see the finish, "Die Vampire, Die!" came on (a song about telling your inner demonic voices to STFU!), and for the last .11-ish I rounded it out with the beginning of "I Run For Life" - which are my two "power songs". I busted butt towards the finish line and crossed somewhere around 41:32. I remember seeing that number, but I'm kind of thinking it was when I turned around in that "OMG I JUST RAN A 5K!!!" haze. The official results aren't up yet.

I'm really proud of myself!! Hopefully this week I can get outside and *maybe* improve my time next week in the Komen - though since there are hills involved there, I'm not going to be mad at myself if I don't do better.

39:39!!!!!!

Yes, you read that right!!!

I ran 5K in under 40 minutes!!!!! Woot!!!!!

Even better? I ran a mile at 5mph!!!! I think I could have gone further, but I didn't want to push and injure myself.

I'm not going to hold myself to under 40 for the race on Sunday, but I'm also not going to complain if it happens. Ha!! (I looked at the results from last year, and the last person to finish did so in like an hour and 19 minutes. So I'm pretty sure I won't be last!)

But I'm psyched!!!!

Weigh-In

So it's been a week of logging my calories and exercise on MyFitnessPal. I've met some new buddies, and I've learned a lot. Like how it really does hold you accountable and make you think twice when you're logging in everything you eat. There were choices I made because I knew I didn't have the calories to spare - that's something that wouldn't have happened before.

I gotta say, when you hear it on The Biggest Loser - "The ones who log what they eat are the ones who will lose the most" - it's easy to think "Yeah, but you're also doing nothing but working out..." and sort of brush it off. But it's really true. The results speak for themselves...

Last week's numbers:
weight - 195.6
body fat - 35.7%
water - 46.7%
bone density - 6.7%
BMI - 31.4

Today's numbers:
weight - 191.6
body fat - 35.3%
water - 47.1%
bone density - 6.6%
BMI - 30.8

Woohoo!!! I am 0.9 away from sliding into the merely "overweight" category with my BMI. For me that'll be a HUGE milestone!!!

Onward and downward!!

SOOOOO in love with Bob's Yoga for the Warrior!!!

Seriously. This DVD is AMAZING!!!! It's challenging, but so doable - even if you have to modify some things (like I still can't get my hands to connect in the pretzel thing, but I'm getting closer!!

It's definitely my favorite workout DVD of the moment!!!!

That said, via Shredheads I'm signed up for "Team Bob" for the month of September. We'll be working our way through Bob's workouts as per the schedule he outlines here. AND I'm keeping up my running at least three days a week. So this should be VERY interesting!

But I'm psyched for it!!

In other news, the little heart rate monitor I got yesterday and was so excited to try failed to work at all today. Well, I could get a reading using the touch sensor on the watch, but that's not going to help me DURING my workout as I can't do an entire workout touching the watch. That's the point of the chest strap. It worked perfectly yesterday when I tried it for 10 minutes, but this morning nothing I did would get the chest strap to pick up anything. :( So I took it back to the store. At first the manager tried to make me just exchange it for another, but I held my ground. I very calmly explained that the only likely explanation for it not working was a dead battery in the chest strap, and since the monitors come with the watch in "power save" mode, that would mean that it's been sitting around in a warehouse for far too long, and I didn't trust that any I exchanged it for would be any more recently put into inventory. I said I would like a refund please. He said he couldn't argue with that (meaning I was right, that they've been sitting around a warehouse for far too long - so obviously they are not moving them at all or very quickly) and refunded my purchase. NOW to see how long it takes to show up at the bank again. Once it does, I am going to head to Jack Rabbit and get a Polar HRM. In this case it really does seem you get what you pay for. (Also? I can guarantee you they're moving the monitors at running stores. I'm choosing Jack Rabbit since I get 10% off purchases and I love them for all the help they've given me! Yay!) IF all goes as you would think it should, I could have a monitor as soon as tomorrow. But I'm not holding my breath as putting the money back on the card/in the account usually takes longer than taking it off/taking it out.

40:19!

Improved my time by a bit today, so that's good!

What I'm more impressed with about myself right now is that 1/5 of a mile was at 5.5mph! I'm trying to work on varying my speeds since I'm sure that race nerves and being around other runners will influence my speed a bit. By doing up and down speed variations, I'll push my body until I HAVE to slow down so I can teach my muscles what the signs are that I need to adjust. I'm feeling good though!!

Also, I bought a heart rate monitor today - it'll help me keep much better track of the calories I'm burning so I have a much clearer idea of what's going out and I can adjust what's going in accordingly. :)

40:47!!

That's what I ran 5K in today!! I was so pumped...and also a little freaked. I walked pretty fast and had to take a longer way around to get to the gym, so I counted that as my warm-up, which meant I started out running. I started at 4.5mph with a 1.0 incline, then about 10 minutes in went to 4.7mph with a 0.5 incline and switched between the two for most of the time. I did do about a 4 minute "walk" at 4.2mph, and towards the end I bumped it up to 5mph, so for all but 5 minutes of it I was running!! :)

And the best part was that at the end I didn't really feel like "OMG I HAVE TO STOP" like I have before. I'm not sure what made today different - maybe the solid rest day yesterday? I do plan to rest on Saturday so I'm ready for the run on Sunday. EEEE!!!!

2010-08-28 03:59 pm

Yay!

Today was going to be my first attempt back at running since the whole knee cramping (or whatever it HURT) when walking down stairs incident of Wednesday. It is a gorgeous day, so I contemplated going to Central Park and running or going to Prospect Park and checking that out. But I decided to hit the gym for a couple of reasons. First, ironic as it may seem, I feel like I've got more control over the treadmill in terms of speed, incline, etc. than outside. And second, and most important regarding the knee, it's a fixed distance from the subway station. In case anything DID go wrong, I'd rather be a fixed distance from the subway station than potentially be on the other side of the park from the subway station.

So gym it was.

I started with my warm-up walk, then went to a faster walk before increasing to a run. And I only ran in 5 minute segments with 5 minutes of 4mph walking between. I felt great, and did 5K in 44:15. So that was slower than Wednesday, but my knee felt FINE after!! I can try increasing the running time - or possibly going at 5mph for my 5 minute segments - during the week. And then next Sunday I'll basically just listen to my body. I'll try to walk around and get myself warmed up before the race starts so I won't have to do that first 5 minutes walking, but we'll see.

Overall I'm feeling good.

And really feeling like a runner - when I couldn't run for a couple of days it was really hard. I found myself WANTING to run. So I just have to make sure I don't push things too hard.

When I got home I decided to do the "15 Minute Yoga Abs" segment on Bob's Yoga for the Warrior dvd to work my abs a little. Make that A LOT!!!! Other than using boat pose as a base for some of the work, there is nothing yoga about that workout. It is 15 minutes of solid abs. I didn't do everything - there were a couple of places where I just had to rest or go to simple crunches. I'm sure my abs will let me hear about it for DAYS to come.

But I know I'll be back for more. Hee!

As scared as I still am of Bob's Cody Rev Cardio...

...that's how much in love I am with his Yoga for the Warrior!!

It's definitely tough, and there are several things I have to adapt, but it is a GREAT workout!!

I did it for the first time while I was home, and then again yesterday since didn't want to push my knee by running.

LOVE!!!!

I was getting frustrated because I wasn't really able to do Half Moon because I'm not to the point of keeping my hand on the ground yet. When I went to Laughing Lotus* we were allowed to use blocks on those balance poses so we could do the pose while we built up flexibility. But I wasn't sure if that was copacetic with this workout, because Bob doesn't give that to the adapting guy as an option. So I @ commented Bob on Twitter to see if it was ok to use a block. Today he @ replied me back and said "totally OK" so woo!!! Getting myself a yoga block this afternoon!!!

*Laughing Lotus is this fantastic yoga studio I found a few years ago. I don't even remember how. but I fell in love with it. Some instructors I liked and related to more than others, but that's normal and could easily be worked around. I stopped going, largely because of money - I couldn't really do a 3-month class card all the time, and I felt like I would burn through a 10-class card too quickly because I was going multiple times a week. But as I'm getting back into things, I am finding that while I can do yoga at home by myself, I really miss the community that exists at the studio. Even with different people in classes, there is a sense of community there. So I'm looking at budget and things, and they have a 10-class card special until Tuesday. Since I'm doing running and stuff, realistically I'd go once, maybe twice a week, so a 10-class card would last me about 2 months. And I could do that. So I think I will go to a class on Monday or Tuesday and get that card. :)
